The 2005 Mercedes-Benz G400 Convertible is one of the rarest and most distinctive versions of the legendary G-Class, combining rugged off-road capability with open-top luxury. Based on the G-Class platform that has roots stretching back to the late 1970s, the G400 Convertible (often called the G400 CDI Cabriolet in certain markets) was a limited-production model, primarily hand-assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria. It featured a short-wheelbase two-door design, a fully retractable soft top, and the same body-on-frame construction that made the G-Wagon famous for its durability and off-road prowess. Under the bonnet, the G400 was powered by a 4.0 litre V8 turbo-diesel engine, producing around 250 horsepower and a strong 560 Nm of torque. This gave the convertible impressive pulling power and smooth performance both on the motorway and on challenging terrain. Power is transmitted through a five-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' renowned 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, which included low-range gearing and three locking differentials rare features for any convertible. Inside, the G400 Convertible offered the opulent comfort expected from Mercedes-Benz, with high-quality leather upholstery, wood trim, and advanced features for its time. Despite its boxy exterior and military roots, it provided a surprisingly refined driving experience.
