The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL is one of the most enduring and iconic models in the marque’s history. Produced from 1971 to 1989, it combined elegance, robustness and grand touring comfort in one package. In 1986, the model underwent a significant update, including a revised range of engines, improved suspension and crucially, the introduction of a galvanised body shell – greatly improving corrosion resistance. These later cars, often referred to as ‘facelift’ models, are among the most sought after, particularly in six-cylinder 300SL form which offered a balance of smooth power delivery and relative economy. The stunning 300SL on offer here, which is believed to be one of the last R107 SLs built, must not be confused with the many average examples that come to market, standing head and shoulders above its contemporaries, exceptional and original throughout and used sparingly throughout its life, as shown by the incredibly low recorded mileage of 7,837. Finished in gleaming Signal Red with a colour matched factory hardtop and a black leather and cloth interior, this is one of the best examples we have ever offered and is equipped with an electrically operated roof which was never available from the factory. The manual soft top is superbly engineered, and if kept well adjusted is easy to operate, however it is fairly heavy and is the one thing which puts some people off the car. Many R107s have their hardtops permanently in place for this reason, which is a criminal waste of the car’s best feature. The power-operated folding roof utilises a system very similar to the R107's successor, the R129, enabling the hardtop to be stowed in the garage on its stand for the summer. Registered on 1st May 1990 and showing three former keepers, your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully understand the level of originality that is displayed, a rare example indeed that will be perfectly at home within any Mercedes collection or is ready to simply be enjoyed and appreciated by its next devotee and custodian.
