1961 LAND ROVER SERIES 2 - £5,500
Its with heavy heart i have for sale "Sandy the Landy" my 1961 Ex Military series 2a Land rover.
She is both tax and MOT exempt, although i have just re-moted her for peace of mind. She flew through with the only advisory being "oil leak". The Examiner commented on how good she was considering her age, and Land rovers reputation for rusty chassis!
I have owned her since 2014 and have loved every minute, she really is great fun and my son loves her to bits.
Unfortunately my wife isn't so keen! mostly due to the fact there are NO SEAT BELTS fitted, Apparently weren't invented in 1961!
She is fitted with overdrive, fairey i think. and freewheeling hubs, so trundles along at upto 55-60mph
Being ex military she has twin tanks under the seats, although i only use the drivers side as the passenger one is rusty. I use lead additive in the fuel as i don't think the heads have been done.
She is fitted with an early type 3 bearing 2 & 1/4 petrol engine which runs beautifully, if a little smoky on start up.
She brakes in a straight line. Pulls well, goes up through the gears with ease, coming down though she isn't fitted with synchromesh so takes a bit of getting used to.
The wheels are early steel Range rover, with the centres of the fronts cut to go over the free wheeling hubs. I have a set of standard series 2a steels to go with her, but the tyres are old and cracked.
The wings were cut way back by a previous owner, i do have another pair from a 60's military 2a, but they are in poor condition, but the rare uncut front panels are ok.
I have replaced the starter motor, door tops, ignition barrel, drivers door lock, various seals and bits and bobs in my ownership. Also fitted laminated new screens.
Being a 58 yr oldland rover it has numerous oil leaks, never bothered me much, but engine, gearbox, transfer box and diff all seem to leak to some degree.
The chassis shows some signs of repair and one cross member is dented. It has been painted in some kind of underseal when it was last rebuilt, approx 7 years ago. I have kept her garaged in my ownership and so is in great condition.
The bulkhead also shows signs of repair, (Not too skilful, but does the job!)
All in all she is a great old machine though maybe not for the purist.
Costs approx £80 a year to insure fully comp, is great fun in the summer with the door tops off and the roof rolled up. Our very own 'lumpity, bumpity army truck'
Reason for sale is we need the funds for a classic Merc motorhome ive been offered.
'Sandy' is currently residing in my industrial unit, and can be viewed there. I also have a 2 post ramp so you can look all round, and under her to make sure she's as good as i say.
